MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER
Pollution, a global menace, is a problem that transcends national boundaries and thus, necessitates a collective response. I wholeheartedly agree with the viewpoint that addressing pollution requires a global approach involving cooperation between nations.
Firstly, the interconnectedness of our planet's ecosystems means that pollution in one country can have far-reaching effects on others. For instance, air pollution from industrial activities in China has been found to affect air quality as far away as the United States. This clearly illustrates that pollution is not a localized issue and hence, cannot be effectively tackled by individual countries acting in isolation.
Secondly, the global nature of many industries contributes to the transboundary nature of pollution. For example, the shipping industry, which is responsible for a significant portion of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, operates across national borders. Therefore, international cooperation is essential to regulate such industries and mitigate their environmental impact.
Moreover, developing countries often lack the resources and technology to combat pollution effectively. In such cases, cooperation from developed nations, in terms of financial aid and technology transfer, can play a crucial role in helping these countries reduce their pollution levels. The Montreal Protocol, which successfully phased out the use of ozone-depleting substances worldwide, is a prime example of how international cooperation can lead to significant environmental improvements.
However, while international cooperation is necessary, it should not absolve individual nations of their responsibility to address pollution within their borders. Each country must take proactive measures to reduce pollution, such as implementing strict environmental regulations and promoting sustainable practices.
In conclusion, given the global nature of pollution, international cooperation is not just desirable, but essential to effectively address this issue. However, this should be complemented by national efforts to ensure a comprehensive approach to pollution control.
