Some people argue that healthcare should be provided based on need rather than ability to pay. Do you agree or disagree with this approach? What are the challenges of implementing it?
MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER
It is an undeniable fact that healthcare is a fundamental human right and should not be a privilege for those who can afford it. I wholeheartedly agree with the notion that medical services should be provided based on need rather than the ability to pay. However, implementing such a system is not without its challenges.
The primary reason for my stance is the ethical obligation to treat all individuals equally, regardless of their financial status. Health is a universal need, and everyone should have access to medical services when required. It is unjust to deny someone necessary treatment simply because they lack the financial means. Moreover, a society where healthcare is based on need rather than wealth is likely to be healthier overall, leading to increased productivity and a better quality of life for all.
However, transitioning to a needs-based healthcare system presents several challenges. The most significant of these is funding. In a system where services are provided free of charge or at a reduced cost, the government would need to bear the financial burden. This could lead to increased taxes, which may not be popular among the public. Additionally, there could be a surge in demand for healthcare services, potentially leading to longer waiting times and a strain on resources.
Another challenge is determining what constitutes a 'need'. While some medical conditions clearly require immediate attention, others are less clear-cut. Deciding who gets priority could become a contentious issue, possibly leading to accusations of unfairness or bias.
In conclusion, while the idea of providing healthcare based on need rather than ability to pay is morally compelling, it is not without its practical challenges. However, these obstacles should not deter us from striving for a more equitable healthcare system. With careful planning and adequate funding, it is possible to create a system that serves the needs of all, not just those who can afford it.
