MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

The debate over whether healthcare professionals should focus more on treating existing illnesses or preventing future health problems is a contentious one. While some argue that immediate treatment should be the priority, others advocate for a more proactive approach. In my opinion, a balanced approach that combines both strategies would be the most effective. On one hand, treating existing illnesses is undeniably crucial. Immediate medical attention can alleviate suffering, prolong life, and in many cases, completely cure the patient. For instance, a person suffering from a heart attack requires immediate medical intervention to survive. In such cases, prevention strategies would be irrelevant and ineffective. Therefore, the importance of treating existing illnesses cannot be undermined. On the other hand, prevention of future health problems is equally important. Preventive measures such as regular health check-ups, vaccinations, and promoting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of developing many diseases. For example, regular exercise and a balanced diet can prevent obesity, which is a leading cause of numerous health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Thus, prevention can not only save lives but also reduce the burden on healthcare systems. However, it is important to note that the choice between treatment and prevention is not always clear-cut. Some diseases, such as cancer, require both strategies. Early detection through preventive screening can significantly improve the prognosis, but treatment is also necessary to eliminate the disease. In conclusion, while treating existing illnesses is essential, the importance of preventing future health problems should not be overlooked. A balanced approach that combines both strategies is necessary to ensure the overall health and well-being of individuals. This would not only save lives but also make healthcare more efficient and sustainable in the long run.
