MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

It is often argued that people who maintain a healthy lifestyle should be rewarded with lower health insurance premiums. I wholeheartedly agree with this perspective, as it not only encourages individuals to adopt healthier habits but also reduces the burden on the healthcare system. To begin with, incentivizing healthy living through reduced insurance premiums could serve as a powerful motivator for individuals to make healthier choices. This could include regular exercise, a balanced diet, and regular health check-ups. These habits are known to prevent or manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Therefore, it is logical that those who actively work towards preventing these conditions should benefit from lower insurance costs. Moreover, individuals who lead a healthy lifestyle are less likely to require medical intervention, thus reducing the strain on healthcare resources. This would result in fewer hospital admissions and less demand for expensive medical procedures, which in turn would lower the overall cost of healthcare. Consequently, it would be fair to reflect this reduced risk in the form of lower insurance premiums for these individuals. However, it is important to consider that not all health issues are a direct result of lifestyle choices. Genetic predisposition and environmental factors also play a significant role in an individual's health. Therefore, while encouraging healthy habits is crucial, it should not lead to penalizing those who are at a higher risk due to factors beyond their control. In conclusion, while it is essential to consider all factors influencing an individual's health, offering lower health insurance premiums to those leading a healthy lifestyle could be an effective way to promote healthier choices and manage healthcare costs. However, it is equally important to ensure that this policy does not unfairly disadvantage those who are predisposed to certain health conditions due to genetic or environmental factors.
