MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

While some may argue that an ageing population brings numerous advantages, I respectfully disagree. I believe the challenges outweigh the benefits in this demographic shift. The first pressing concern related to an ageing population is the strain on healthcare systems. As individuals grow older, their health often begins to falter, necessitating more frequent and intensive medical care. This increase in demand can overwhelm existing healthcare facilities and personnel, leading to a scarcity of resources that impacts all ages. For instance, in countries like Japan, where a significant portion of the society is elderly, there's been a substantial increase in healthcare spending, underscoring the system's pressure. Additionally, an ageing population poses economic challenges. With more people retiring and fewer entering the workforce, the balance between those contributing to and those withdrawing from pension schemes is disturbed. The younger working demographic faces an increasing burden to sustain the older generation, which can lead to economic stagnation. In fact, economies with a higher proportion of older adults often exhibit slower growth, underlining the negative impact of a top-heavy age structure. In summary, an ageing society often grapples with overburdened healthcare systems and sluggish economic growth. While there are certainly wisdom and experience that come with age, the disadvantages seem to eclipse these positive aspects, leading me to conclude that an ageing population presents more challenges than benefits for society.
