Do you agree or disagree that the shift of populations from rural to urban areas is beneficial for a country's economic development?

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

The ongoing migration from the countryside to cities has sparked debate concerning its impact on economic progress. I firmly believe this urban shift propels a nation's economy forward. One significant advantage is the concentration of human capital in urban centers. Cities become hotbeds for skilled workers, fostering innovation and attracting investments. A case in point is Silicon Valley, which has morphed into a tech powerhouse, significantly contributing to the U.S. economy. This exemplifies how urbanization can create vibrant economic hubs that drive national progress. Furthermore, the clustering of talent facilitates knowledge exchange, enhancing productivity and economic dynamism. Additionally, urban migration creates economies of scale in public service provision. Infrastructure like roads, schools, and hospitals are more cost-effective when serving a concentrated population, reducing per capita expenses. For instance, Seoul's efficient public transportation system is a direct result of its dense population, enabling both the government and residents to save money and time. As a clear outcome, these savings can be channeled into further economic development activities. To sum up, the migration trend to urban areas serves as a catalyst for economic enhancement. It gathers human resources for innovation and yields economies of scale in public services. The movement indeed brings challenges, but its role in shaping a robust economy cannot be undermined. Hence, the rural exodus, in my view, is a cornerstone in fortifying a nation's economic foundation.
