Some people argue that pharmaceutical companies prioritize profits over public health. Do you agree or disagree with this perspective? How can governments ensure ethical pharmaceutical practices?
MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER
It is often contended that pharmaceutical companies place their financial gains above the welfare of the public. I concur with this viewpoint to a large extent, as numerous instances of such behavior have been observed. However, I also believe that governments can play a crucial role in ensuring ethical practices in this industry.
Pharmaceutical companies, like any other businesses, are primarily driven by profits. This is evident in the exorbitant prices they charge for life-saving drugs, making them inaccessible to many who need them. Furthermore, these companies often spend more on marketing and advertising than on research and development, indicating a focus on sales rather than the creation of innovative and effective medicines.
However, it would be unjust to label all pharmaceutical companies as profit-driven. Some do invest heavily in research and development, striving to create drugs that can cure diseases and improve public health. These companies often provide their products at affordable prices, demonstrating a commitment to public welfare.
Governments can ensure ethical pharmaceutical practices by implementing stringent regulations. They can set price caps on essential drugs to make them affordable for everyone. They can also mandate that a certain percentage of a company's revenue be invested in research and development. Moreover, governments can encourage transparency by requiring companies to disclose their spending on marketing, research, and executive salaries.
In conclusion, while it is true that some pharmaceutical companies prioritize profits over public health, it is not a universal truth. Governments have the power and responsibility to regulate these companies and ensure they operate ethically. By doing so, they can strike a balance between the profit motive of these companies and the health needs of the public.
