Some people argue that universal healthcare should be a basic human right. Do you agree or disagree with this perspective? How can societies balance the cost of healthcare with equitable access?

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

I wholeheartedly agree with the perspective that universal healthcare should be a basic human right. The fundamental principle of human rights is that they are inalienable and universal, and health, being a prerequisite for life and well-being, should not be an exception. The first argument supporting this viewpoint is the ethical aspect. Health is a fundamental determinant of quality of life and longevity. Therefore, it is morally imperative for societies to ensure that every individual, irrespective of their socio-economic status, has access to basic healthcare services. This is not just about treating illnesses or injuries, but also about preventive care, which can help reduce the overall burden of disease and improve public health. However, the provision of universal healthcare is often met with the challenge of high costs. It is here that the role of governments becomes crucial. Governments can balance the cost of healthcare with equitable access through efficient use of resources, prioritization of health services, and robust health financing mechanisms. For instance, they can invest in primary healthcare, which is not only cost-effective but also addresses a large part of the population's health needs. Moreover, governments can explore different health financing models to fund universal healthcare. Progressive taxation, where the rich are taxed more than the poor, can be an effective way to pool resources for health. Additionally, international aid can also be sought, especially for low-income countries. In conclusion, while the cost of healthcare is a significant challenge, it should not be a barrier to the provision of universal healthcare. With political will, sound policies, and international cooperation, societies can ensure that healthcare, as a basic human right, is accessible to all. This would not only be a reflection of social justice but also a means to achieve healthier and more equitable societies.
