MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

Over the years, the dynamics of parenting and childhood have evolved remarkably across various cultures. This evolution has brought about significant differences in the upbringing of children by the current generation compared to the previous ones. The contrast in parenting styles and its implications on children and society are profound and worth discussing. Traditionally, parenting was characterized by a more authoritarian approach, where obedience and respect for elders were paramount. Children had limited freedom and were expected to adhere strictly to the rules set by their parents. This approach was believed to instill discipline and prepare children for the challenges of adult life. However, it often led to a communication gap between parents and children, stifling the child's ability to express themselves freely. In contrast, modern parenting advocates for a more permissive and democratic approach. Today, parents are more inclined to treat their children as equals, encouraging open communication and emotional expression. This shift aims to foster a stronger parent-child bond and support the child's emotional and psychological development. While this approach promotes independence and creativity, critics argue that it may lead to a lack of discipline and respect for authority. The effects of these contrasting parenting styles are evident in society. The traditional approach produced generations that were perhaps more disciplined but less open to expressing their emotions or challenging societal norms. On the other hand, the modern approach has nurtured more independent and innovative individuals, albeit with a perceived decline in respect for authority and discipline. In conclusion, while both parenting styles have their merits and drawbacks, the optimal approach may lie in finding a balance between the two. By combining discipline with emotional support, parents can prepare their children to navigate the complexities of modern society effectively.
