MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER
The debate on the ethics versus the necessity of using animals for research has been ongoing for years. While some consider it vital for progress, others deem it inhumane. I personally believe that while animal testing has been historically significant, its costs often exceed the benefits, and it is high time we seek alternative methods.
Animal testing proponents highlight its indispensable role in medical and scientific advancements. It has undoubtedly been integral to the development of life-saving treatments and understanding of complex diseases. For instance, the polio vaccine, which has saved countless lives, was a direct result of animal research. This example often helps justify the continued use of animals in laboratories, suggesting a direct benefit to human health that might not have been possible otherwise.
On the other hand, the ethical concern resides in the suffering inflicted on animals. With modern technological progress, the question arises whether it is still justifiable to rely on such methods. Animal rights advocates point out the moral dilemma of using sentient beings as test subjects, often causing them pain, distress, or even death, without their consent. The psychological impact on animals, akin to humans in many ways, has also raised substantial concerns.
Summarizing both points, while animal experimentation has paved the way for medical breakthroughs, the ethical costs are significant. My conviction aligns with moving towards humane, innovative alternatives that do not compromise the welfare of animals. Advancements in areas like in vitro testing and computational models present promising options that may offer a middle ground, where scientific progress does not come at the expense of animal wellbeing.
