Some argue that protecting endangered species is a waste of resources, while others believe it is vital for maintaining biodiversity. Discuss both views and provide your opinion.

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

Some individuals contend that the allocation of resources towards the preservation of endangered species is an unnecessary expenditure. They argue that these resources could be better utilized in areas such as healthcare, education, or infrastructure, which directly impact human lives. This perspective is primarily driven by anthropocentric values, where human needs and interests are prioritized over those of other species. Critics of this view argue that this approach is short-sighted and fails to recognize the interconnectedness of all life forms. They assert that every species plays a unique role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems. The extinction of a single species can trigger a domino effect, disrupting food chains and habitats, which could ultimately impact human survival. For instance, the decline in bee populations worldwide poses a significant threat to agriculture, as bees play a crucial role in pollination. Moreover, proponents of biodiversity conservation argue that every species has an intrinsic value, irrespective of its utility to humans. They believe that humans have a moral obligation to protect all forms of life, not just those that are beneficial to us. This view is rooted in biocentric or ecocentric values, which advocate for the equal consideration of all species. In my opinion, while it is essential to allocate resources to sectors that directly impact human lives, it is equally important to invest in the protection of endangered species. The survival of these species is not just a matter of biodiversity but also a question of our survival. The health of our planet and its ecosystems directly affects the quality of human life. In conclusion, while the protection of endangered species may seem like a diversion of resources to some, it is a crucial investment in the long-term sustainability of our planet. It is imperative that we strike a balance between meeting human needs and preserving biodiversity to ensure the survival of all species, including our own.
