MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

Urban planning is a critical aspect of modern society, and the debate on whether it should prioritize green infrastructure or housing and infrastructure is a contentious one. While both aspects are essential for a balanced urban environment, I believe that a harmonious integration of both is the key to sustainable urban development. Green infrastructure such as parks and gardens provide numerous benefits to urban dwellers. They serve as a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of city life, offering a place for relaxation and recreation. Moreover, they contribute to the overall health and well-being of the population by reducing air pollution, providing spaces for physical activity, and promoting mental health. Additionally, green spaces are crucial for biodiversity, acting as habitats for various species, thus contributing to the ecological balance. On the other hand, housing and infrastructure are equally important in urban planning. With the ever-growing population, the demand for housing is increasing rapidly. Adequate and affordable housing is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for a decent standard of living. Similarly, infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and public transportation systems are vital for the smooth functioning of a city, facilitating mobility, and economic growth. However, prioritizing one over the other could lead to an imbalance in urban development. For instance, focusing solely on housing and infrastructure could result in concrete jungles devoid of greenery, leading to environmental degradation and a decline in the quality of life. Conversely, overemphasis on green infrastructure could lead to housing shortages and inadequate infrastructure, causing socio-economic problems. In conclusion, urban planning should strive for a balanced approach, integrating green infrastructure with housing and other infrastructure. This would not only cater to the housing needs and facilitate economic growth but also ensure environmental sustainability and enhance the quality of life for urban dwellers. It is a challenging task, but with careful planning and execution, it is achievable.
