In many countries, the preservation of cultural heritage sites is seen as less important than economic development. What are the causes of this perspective, and what effects does it have on the society and the cultural heritage itself?

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

In the contemporary world, the rapid pace of economic development often overshadows the importance of preserving cultural heritage sites. This phenomenon can be attributed to several causes, and it has profound effects on both society and the cultural heritage. One primary cause is the pressing need for economic expansion in developing countries. Governments in these nations prioritize infrastructural development, such as building roads and industries, over the preservation of ancient sites, viewing the former as more critical to improving the living standards of their citizens. Additionally, the allure of modernization leads to a valuation of new developments over old, with the latter often seen as impediments to progress rather than assets to be preserved. This perspective, however, has significant consequences. Societally, it leads to a loss of identity and a disconnect from historical roots, as younger generations grow up unfamiliar with their cultural heritage. This erosion of cultural identity can result in a homogenized global culture where unique traditions and histories are lost. For the cultural heritage sites themselves, the effect is even more dire; once destroyed or significantly altered, these irreplaceable treasures are lost forever, along with the knowledge and history they embody. In conclusion, while economic development is undoubtedly important, it should not come at the cost of losing cultural heritage. A balance must be struck that allows for both economic progress and the preservation of cultural sites, ensuring that as societies advance, they do not lose sight of their historical and cultural identities.
