MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

Over the last half-century, the evolution of gender roles has significantly transformed societies worldwide, including my country. This essay will compare and contrast these changes and discuss their societal impacts. Fifty years ago, gender roles in my country were distinctly defined: men were the breadwinners, while women were homemakers. This division was not only socially accepted but also culturally enforced. However, the ensuing decades have witnessed a dramatic shift. Today, both men and women actively participate in the workforce, and the concept of shared responsibilities at home is increasingly common. One of the most notable changes is in the professional sphere. Previously, high-paying and prestigious jobs were predominantly occupied by men, with women relegated to lower-paying positions or staying at home. Now, women not only pursue careers in all fields, including those once deemed male-dominated, such as engineering and politics, but they also attain leadership roles, breaking the so-called 'glass ceiling.' This shift has not only allowed women to become financially independent but also helped in reshaping societal perceptions about gender capabilities. Contrastingly, the change in men's roles has been subtler yet significant. There is a growing acceptance and expectation for men to participate in domestic chores and childcare, roles traditionally seen as women's responsibilities. This evolution reflects a move towards more egalitarian households, where tasks are shared based on availability and preference rather than gender. The impact of these changes on society has been profound. Economically, the inclusion of women in the workforce has contributed to growth and diversity. Socially, the blurring of gender roles has fostered a more inclusive environment, encouraging talents and skills over stereotypes. However, challenges remain, including wage disparities and the underrepresentation of women in certain sectors, indicating the journey towards gender equality is ongoing. In conclusion, the last 50 years have seen significant changes in gender roles in my country, leading to more equitable and diverse societies. While progress has been made, continuous efforts are necessary to address remaining inequalities.
