In some countries, the government has implemented harsher penalties for crimes, while in others, they focus more on rehabilitation than punishment. Discuss both approaches and give your opinion on which is more effective in reducing crime.

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

The debate over the effectiveness of harsher penalties versus rehabilitation in reducing crime rates is ongoing. On one hand, some countries believe in implementing strict punishments as a deterrent. For instance, nations with zero-tolerance policies for drug-related offenses often have severe penalties, including long prison sentences or even capital punishment. The rationale behind this approach is that the fear of harsh punishment will deter individuals from committing crimes. However, critics argue that this method does not address the root causes of criminal behavior, such as poverty, lack of education, and substance abuse. On the other hand, there are countries that prioritize rehabilitation over punishment. These nations invest in correctional programs aimed at reforming offenders through education, vocational training, and psychological support. The goal is to reintegrate individuals into society as productive members, thereby reducing the likelihood of reoffending. Supporters of this approach argue that it not only helps in lowering crime rates but also in improving the overall well-being of the society. In my opinion, rehabilitation is more effective in reducing crime in the long term. While harsher penalties may provide a temporary deterrent, they fail to address the underlying issues that lead to criminal behavior. Rehabilitation, on the other hand, offers a solution that not only prevents crime but also aids in the recovery of those who have strayed. It fosters a society that values transformation and second chances, which is essential for reducing recidivism and promoting a safer community.
