Many people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for their country. Do you agree or disagree? Discuss your views with examples.
MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER
International tourism has become a double-edged sword in the modern world. While some argue that it brings negative consequences to the host country, I disagree with this notion and believe that the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Firstly, international tourism significantly boosts the economy of a country. It creates jobs, from hospitality to retail, and increases revenue through spending on accommodation, food, and attractions. For instance, countries like Thailand and Spain have seen their economies flourish thanks to the influx of tourists. Secondly, it promotes cultural exchange. Tourists bring their own cultures and traditions, fostering a global village concept. This exchange enriches the host country's culture, promoting understanding and tolerance among different peoples. Moreover, it can lead to the preservation of heritage sites that might otherwise be neglected. However, it is undeniable that tourism can lead to environmental degradation and overcrowding. Places like Venice and Bali have suffered under the strain of excessive tourism. Yet, these issues can be mitigated through sustainable tourism practices and proper management. Governments and local communities can implement measures such as limiting the number of visitors to sensitive areas and promoting eco-friendly tourism activities. In conclusion, while international tourism does present challenges, its positive impacts on economic growth and cultural exchange are invaluable. With careful management and a focus on sustainability, the benefits of international tourism can be maximized, making it a boon rather than a bane for host countries.
