Many people believe that international tourism has negative implications for their countries, such as cultural erosion and environmental damage. However, others argue that it promotes understanding and appreciation between different cultures. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. What measures can be taken to mitigate the negative impacts of international tourism?
MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER
International tourism is often seen through a lens of controversy, with its impact on host countries being a subject of much debate. On one hand, it is criticized for leading to cultural erosion and environmental degradation. On the other, it is lauded for fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
Critics argue that international tourism can dilute local traditions and values, as communities may alter their way of life and cultural practices to cater to tourists. Furthermore, the influx of visitors can strain natural resources and lead to pollution, threatening biodiversity and ecosystems. However, proponents of international tourism highlight its role in promoting cultural exchange and tolerance. Tourists and hosts engage in a mutual exchange of ideas and customs, which can lead to a greater appreciation of cultural diversity. Additionally, tourism can generate significant economic benefits, supporting local economies and creating employment opportunities.
In my opinion, while international tourism does present challenges, its benefits cannot be overlooked. It is crucial, however, to adopt sustainable tourism practices to minimize its negative impacts. Governments and tourism operators should implement regulations to protect natural and cultural heritage, such as limiting visitor numbers to sensitive sites and promoting eco-friendly tourism activities. Communities should also be involved in tourism planning and development, ensuring that it supports local culture and livelihoods.
In conclusion, international tourism has the potential to be a force for good, promoting cultural understanding and economic development. By taking appropriate measures to mitigate its negative effects, we can ensure that tourism contributes positively to both host countries and visitors alike.
