MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

Consumerism sparks a great deal of debate, with some praising it as a catalyst for economic progress and variety, while others lambaste it for fostering excess and a fixation on material goods. In this essay, I shall explore both the merits and downsides of this widely discussed phenomenon. One significant upside to consumerism is the stimulation of economic activity. As people purchase more goods, companies ramp up production, which in turn leads to job creation and higher wages. For example, during holiday seasons when consumer spending peaks, retailers often report their highest profits, which underscores consumerism's role in driving the economy. This cycle of spending and growth demonstrates the positive effect consumerism can have on the overall economic health of a society. Conversely, the negative aspects of consumerism shouldn't be overlooked. It has a tendency to encourage the acquisition of unnecessary items, leading to a culture of waste. Many people are constantly chasing the latest gadgets or fashion, which often means discarding perfectly functional items. A prominent case is the rapid turnover of smartphones, frequently driven by consumer desire for the newest model rather than a genuine need, resulting in piles of e-waste. To conclude, consumerism indeed fuels economic momentum and provides consumers with plentiful choices. However, the environmental cost and the promotion of materialistic values cannot be ignored. It is clear that while consumerism has its benefits, it also comes with significant disadvantages that warrant a more mindful and sustainable approach to consumption.
