Some individuals believe that technological devices have led to a decline in face-to-face interactions. Do you agree or disagree with this viewpoint?

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

It is often argued that the advent of digital technology has resulted in a decrease in direct human communication. I wholeheartedly agree with this viewpoint, as I believe that the rise of technology has indeed led to a decline in face-to-face interactions, primarily due to the convenience of digital communication and the addictive nature of social media. Firstly, the convenience offered by digital communication tools has significantly reduced the need for physical interactions. With the advent of smartphones and the internet, people can now communicate with each other regardless of geographical distance. For instance, instead of meeting a friend for coffee to catch up, one can simply send a text or make a video call. This convenience, while beneficial in many ways, has inadvertently led to a decline in face-to-face interactions. Secondly, the addictive nature of social media platforms also contributes to this decline. These platforms are designed to keep users engaged for as long as possible, often at the expense of real-world interactions. Many people, especially the younger generation, spend a significant portion of their day on social media, which leaves less time for face-to-face communication. However, it is important to note that technology is not inherently detrimental to human interaction. It is the way we choose to use it that determines its impact on our lives. For instance, video conferencing tools have enabled people to maintain personal and professional relationships during the Covid-19 pandemic, when physical meetings were not possible. In conclusion, while technology has indeed led to a decline in face-to-face interactions due to its convenience and the addictive nature of social media, it is ultimately up to individuals to use it responsibly. It is crucial that we strike a balance between digital communication and face-to-face interactions to maintain healthy relationships and a well-rounded life.
