MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

The topic of children participating in paid work has sparked a heated debate. On one hand, critics argue that this practice is exploitative and detrimental to a child's development. On the other hand, proponents believe that it offers valuable work experience and teaches responsibility. This essay will explore both sides of the argument before concluding with a personal viewpoint. Opponents of children engaging in paid work argue that it robs them of their childhood and educational opportunities. Children, they assert, should spend their time learning in school and enjoying their youth, not laboring in jobs that may expose them to harmful environments. Moreover, child labor can lead to exploitation, with children often working long hours for minimal pay, which is ethically and morally wrong. Conversely, supporters of the notion argue that paid work can provide children with essential life skills. They contend that work experience, even at a young age, teaches responsibility, time management, and the value of money. Furthermore, for some families, the additional income generated by children can be crucial for their survival, especially in economically disadvantaged contexts. In my opinion, while the need for financial support cannot be overlooked, the welfare and education of children should take precedence. Safeguards should be in place to ensure that work does not interfere with education and does not exploit the child. In cases where work is necessary, it should be tailored to be educational and beneficial, rather than merely a source of labor. In conclusion, although there are valid arguments on both sides, the protection and education of children should be the priority. Paid work can be beneficial, but it must not come at the expense of a child's development and well-being.
