Some people argue that focusing on research in practical sciences like engineering and medicine is more valuable for society. Others believe that investing in basic scientific research, even without immediate applications, is equally important. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Additionally, should governments prioritize funding for scientific research over other areas such as arts and humanities?

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

The debate on prioritizing practical scientific fields such as engineering and medicine over fundamental research is a source of contention. I believe that while practical applications are crucial, basic science forms the foundation of future innovation. Practical sciences directly impact societal well-being by leading to technological advancements and improved healthcare. For instance, engineering breakthroughs have given us infrastructure and machines that bolster our economy and make our lives more convenient. Similarly, medical research has led to treatments and vaccines that save lives. These tangible benefits illustrate the immediate value of applied sciences. Conversely, basic scientific research, though it may lack immediate application, is the seed from which future practical discoveries grow. Curiosity-driven exploration has historically led to serendipitous findings, such as the discovery of penicillin, which revolutionized medicine. Without investing in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, we risk stifling innovation and limiting future developments. Turning to the allocation of government funding, a balance must be struck. While science and technology are essential for a nation's development, fields like the arts and humanities enrich our culture and foster critical thinking, empathy, and creativity. Governments should recognize that a holistic approach to funding, one that nurtures all disciplines, can create a society that is not only advanced but also enlightened. In summary, both practical scientific research and basic science are integral to progress, and one should not be chosen at the exclusion of the other. Additionally, government funding should reflect the multifaceted needs of society, supporting scientific endeavors while also cherishing arts and humanities.
