In many parts of the world today, people are judged based on their fashion choices, leading some to argue that fashion is an important part of an individual's identity. Others believe that fashion is superficial and that true identity should be based on a person's character and actions, not their appearance. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

Fashion, often seen as a form of self-expression, plays a significant role in the modern world. It is believed by some that the way individuals dress is a crucial part of their identity, reflecting their personality, culture, and even beliefs. On the other hand, there are those who argue that fashion is merely superficial, insisting that true identity is rooted in one's character and actions rather than their outward appearance. Supporters of the importance of fashion in identity formation argue that clothing and accessories allow individuals to express themselves in ways words cannot. They suggest that fashion can signal social status, group affiliation, or even individuality, serving as a non-verbal language that communicates one's personal story. For example, traditional attire worn by people from different cultures can signify their heritage and pride in their roots. Conversely, critics of this view maintain that fashion is transient and superficial, arguing that a person's true essence should be measured by their actions, moral values, and how they interact with others. They contend that placing too much importance on physical appearance can lead to materialism and a loss of deeper values, overshadowing qualities like kindness, intelligence, and integrity. In my opinion, while fashion can be an avenue for self-expression, it should not be the sole determinant of one's identity. True identity is multi-faceted, encompassing both our external presentations and our internal values. Fashion can complement identity but should not define it entirely. Ultimately, it is our actions and interactions with the world that truly shape who we are. In conclusion, although fashion can play a part in expressing individual identity, it is the substance of a person's character and their actions that truly define them. It is important to find a balance between appearance and essence, ensuring that our fashion choices enhance rather than dictate our true selves.
