In many countries, the number of crimes committed by teenagers is growing. Some people think that regardless of age, teenagers who commit major crimes should receive adult sentences. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

In recent years, the surge in juvenile delinquency has sparked a contentious debate on the appropriate sentencing for teenagers who commit serious crimes. Some argue that teenagers, irrespective of their age, should face adult sentences for major crimes, while others believe in a more lenient approach due to their age. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument before concluding with a personal standpoint. Proponents of harsher sentences for teenagers argue that the gravity of a crime should not be diminished by the perpetrator's age. They contend that serious crimes, such as murder or armed robbery, warrant severe punishment to serve both as a deterrent and a form of retribution. This perspective is grounded in the belief that teenagers are capable of moral reasoning and should, therefore, be held accountable for their actions to the same extent as adults. Conversely, opponents of adult sentences for teenagers highlight the importance of rehabilitation over retribution. They argue that the adolescent brain is still developing, which can impair judgment and impulse control. Therefore, they advocate for interventions that focus on education, rehabilitation, and mental health support, rather than punitive measures. This approach is based on the premise that teenagers have a greater capacity for change and should be given the opportunity to reform. In my opinion, while accountability is crucial, the focus should be on rehabilitation and preventing recidivism among young offenders. The justice system should aim to integrate these individuals back into society as productive members, rather than subjecting them to the potentially corrupting influence of adult prisons. In conclusion, although the argument for adult sentences for teenagers committing major crimes is understandable, a more nuanced approach focusing on rehabilitation is preferable. This not only acknowledges the unique developmental stage of teenagers but also promotes a safer and more inclusive society.
