MODEL ESSAY / ANSWER

The rapid advancement in technology has led to an increase in electronic waste, posing a significant threat to the environment. Some argue that governments should invest in sophisticated waste management technologies, while others believe that raising public awareness about responsible disposal is enough. In my opinion, a combination of both strategies is necessary to effectively address this issue. Investing in advanced waste management technologies is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, these technologies can efficiently segregate and recycle e-waste, reducing the amount of harmful substances released into the environment. For instance, hydrometallurgical processes can recover valuable metals from electronic waste, minimizing the need for mining and reducing environmental pollution. Secondly, these technologies can convert waste into energy, providing a sustainable solution to both waste management and energy shortage problems. However, relying solely on technology is not sufficient. Public awareness about responsible disposal of e-waste is equally important. Many people are unaware of the environmental hazards associated with improper disposal of electronic waste. By educating the public about the importance of recycling and the dangers of improper disposal, governments can encourage responsible behavior and reduce the amount of e-waste generated. Furthermore, governments should also implement strict regulations regarding e-waste disposal. Companies should be held accountable for the lifecycle of their products, encouraging them to design products that are easier to recycle and have a longer lifespan. This would not only reduce the amount of e-waste produced but also promote sustainable product design. In conclusion, while advanced waste management technologies are essential for dealing with e-waste, they are not a standalone solution. A comprehensive approach that includes raising public awareness and implementing strict regulations is necessary to effectively tackle the issue of electronic waste pollution.
